{"id":1275,"date":"2013-01-01T17:48:23","date_gmt":"2013-01-02T01:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/?page_id=1275"},"modified":"2013-01-01T17:48:23","modified_gmt":"2013-01-02T01:48:23","slug":"intro-to-amos","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/?page_id=1275","title":{"rendered":"Intro to Amos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Historically speaking Amos was a prophet in the eighth century BC; the 700\u2019s BC.\u00a0 In order of when they wrote, the writing prophets start with Obadiah, then Joel, Jonah, and Hosea.\u00a0 We have already covered these prophets.\u00a0 Amos is next.\u00a0 Amos identifies the times in which he lived and wrote as during the times of Uzziah the king of Judah (767-750 BC; 791-737 BC as shared king with his father and then his son) and the reign of Jereboam the son of Joash (or Jehoash) king of Israel (793-753 BC). \u00a0Other clues in the history of Israel and Judah point to a date around 760 BC\u00a0 The earthquake mentioned in Amos 1:1 is unknown to scholars with respect to it\u2019s date.<\/p>\n<p>Amos\u2019 message was directed to the northern kingdom, a kingdom with a history of defection from God and a kingdom on a downward path.\u00a0 Jeroboam increased and secured the borders of the Northern kingdom against foreign invasion.\u00a0 This period of peace was also one of prosperity.\u00a0 The people were living quite comfortably.\u00a0 If you read through Isaiah with us, you may remember he wrote to the Southern Kingdom, Judah,\u00a0 about 20 years after Amos and was faced with a similar situation there.\u00a0 In both cases the easy lifestyle led to selfishness and disregard for others.\u00a0 If you read the <a title=\"Intro to Joel\" href=\"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/?page_id=1254\">Intro to Joel<\/a> you might remember that the founder of the Northern Kingdom set up his own way of worshipping Yahweh, the God of all Israelites.\u00a0 Theses changes were not approved of by God and led to the spiritual decline mentioned above.\u00a0 Although Jeroboam was a good political leader he was not a good spiritual leader.\u00a0 He allowed the people to worship Yahweh but set up false idols and images in the public places of worship and encouraged the people to have pretend gods (idols) in their homes.\u00a0 The people, of course, though they were being \u201cgood\u201d Israelites but their spiritual lives were focused on the wrong things and their day to day lives did not match up with the expectations of God.<\/p>\n<p>It was to these comfortable Northern Israelites that the shepherd from hills of the Southern Kingdom came with his message from God.\u00a0 He was out of his place and away from his people but he was right where God wanted him doing what prophets do, warning and encouraging the people to think about the true God and what he really expects of them. \u00a0Like most prophets he would not be very popular but god in his mercy still reaches out to rebellious people.\u00a0 As we live in our comfortable homes living our sometimes selfish lives we need to listen carefully to the message of Amos and see how it applies to us today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Historically speaking Amos was a prophet in the eighth century BC; the 700\u2019s BC.\u00a0 In order of when they wrote, the writing prophets start with Obadiah, then Joel, Jonah, and Hosea.\u00a0 We have already covered these prophets.\u00a0 Amos is next.\u00a0 Amos identifies the times in which he lived and wrote as during the times of [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"parent":50,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","template":"","meta":{"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-1275","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1275","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=1275"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1275\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1276,"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/1275\/revisions\/1276"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/pages\/50"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/deltaforcedaily.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=1275"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
